Paying the Price

When my course at university ended, I went out celebrating with fellow students. During the tour of Edinburgh bars our group separated and I met a guy from another course. He knew a place to continue drinking when the pubs closed.

That night, I was introduced to gambling, and Peter said if we scored a big enough win we could pay off our student loans. The next day I sat in a plush office in front of a casino manager, wishing that I’d never listened to my new acquaintance. I stared at the document in my trembling hands.

The man said, “Look on the positive side, Carl, it’ll be like starting a new, secret life.”
